十二月初,我随美国政府的一个代表团访问了利比里亚,评估这个国家走出埃博拉危机所需的支持。亲身到访让我真切感受到了这场浩劫的沉重。我了解到,在某种意义上,所有利比里亚人都被视为埃博拉的幸存者:那些感染了病毒并在身体上战胜了疾病的人;那些眼睁睁看着至亲家人罹患病毒的人;那些作为医护人员奋战在一线的人;以及最令人心酸的——那些因此成为孤儿的孩子们。疫情在利比里亚肆虐最烈之时,共有10,675名患者确诊,4,809人因此离世。若要有所参照,利比里亚全国人口仅约400万,这意味着每375人中就有1人感染,每840名公民中就有1人因此罹难。

埃博拉病毒利用了人类共有的情感——侥幸心理、恐惧,乃至爱。
