幼貘的条纹迷彩

貘的妊娠期长达13个月。母貘产下幼崽后,会将其藏匿在茂密的林区近一个月,常以一种名为卡拉瓜塔(caraguatá)的带刺灌木作为藏身之所。幼貘身上带有斑点的条纹皮毛(随成长会逐渐褪去)进一步帮助它们躲避美洲虎和美洲狮等天敌的追踪。幼貘不会长时间保持娇小的体型——在生命的头两年里,它们以惊人的速度生长,每周增重两到三千克。摄影:Liana John。
