Many of us believe there are two driving forces behind the person known as “you”: nature and nurture. But, according to personality and motivational psychologist Brian R. Little, there’s a third: projects.

思考个性有两种方式。第一种是从你所拥有的人格特质角度出发,包括经验开放性、尽责性、外向性、宜人性和神经质(我称之为”大五人格特质”)。第二种是从你所做的事情角度出发,即你的个人项目,例如:”克服社交焦虑”、”在销售会议上做一次精彩的陈述”,或”不再拖延”。通过研究个人项目——日常生活中的”行动”——我们能够获得不同的视角,比单纯研究我们的”特质”更能全面地审视自己的生活。

你的所作所为影响着你是谁。这是因为个人项目始终指向未来——它们引领我们前行,沿着或短促颠簸、或漫长平顺的路线不断延伸。通过追踪这些路线,我们得以绘制出最私密的地图:我们自己。最令人振奋的是,我们可以学会调整自己的轨迹,跨越崎岖路段,延伸平坦道路,从而让我们的努力更加富有成效。由此,个人项目通过塑造我们走向蓬勃人生的能力,帮助定义了我们自身。某种意义上,项目的走向,就是人生的走向。

有一点重要的澄清:个人项目并不局限于那些被要求完成的正式任务,例如为妈妈找一家好的养老院。至关重要的是,它们也包括我们心甘情愿选择去做的事。蹒跚学步的幼儿在学走路时是在追求项目,坠入爱河的恋人在相爱时也是如此。个人项目还可以是相当琐碎的追求,比如带狗——或者那只自以为是狗的猫——出去散步。但它们同样可以代表人类最崇高的志向与勇气之举,就像罗莎·帕克斯选择不挪到公共汽车后排那样。
